From The Editor

It’s spring and about to be summer! This is my favorite time of the year. Although, the next issue I will say the hot summer months are my favorite, then I’ll say fall is my favorite, and then of course the holidays are really my favorite. The truth is, I guess I love all the seasons for different reasons. But springtime promises new growth and new awakening. Plants and trees come alive from the winter, and with that we are reminded that if we desire to, we can have a new spiritual growth as well. I am reminded of this scripture: “in simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life” James 1:21 (MSG version).

Depending on your stage of life, this time of the year is full of different events and happenings. I used to think spending long hours at the baseball fields would never end, but now I actually miss those days. My backyard used to be full of kids playing, jumping on the trampoline, roller blading in the driveway, playing any kind of ball in the front yard, bonfires in the fire pit, and some rather mischievous things that I won’t mention!  Those days are long gone for me, but as a new generation comes along, I get to enjoy it all over again!

Stages® MISSISSIPPI continues to be the magazine for a home remodeling resource!

To never miss an issue, you can subscribe for home delivery. Subscribers receive copies of Stages® MISSISSIPPI before they’re distributed to businesses throughout the state, meaning you would be one of the first to view each new issue.

I absolutely love being outdoors. This is the time of the year where my garden comes to life and I am able to get out and enjoy tending to it. It also reminds me of one of my favorite sayings, “bloom where you are planted.” Like a flower that grows through a crack in the concrete, sometimes we have to be strong enough to flourish and produce something beautiful no matter what the situation is.

In this issue our special focus is Bring on the Outdoor Living. We have a beautiful pool and garden area to show you, an outdoor living area, and an exquisite backyard pool. We hope this focus brings you ideas to incorporate into your own home.

This issue, we again bring four homes with different styles: colorful, historic, the St. Jude Dream Home, and a farmhouse style. And, as always, be sure to check out and support the local businesses featured throughout the issue.

Last week, my two dogs and I escaped what could have been a terrible catastrophe, and just like the inconvenience of this snow and ice, it has made me think deeply about life in general. I am very blessed to be here today doing this job, a job that I find satisfying and rewarding in so many ways. Homeowners welcome me into their homes with a smile and with true southern hospitality for to take photos and interview them. As we “ooh” and “ahh” over their homes, let’s remember what really makes these houses special—the owners themselves. The feature homes in this issue are all incredibly diverse and are furnished in different styles and tastes. We have amazing before and after features in the focus section and several promotional features for you to enjoy.

Remember, you can subscribe to Stages® MISSISSIPPI. Subscribers receive the issues before they’re distributed to businesses throughout the state, meaning you will be one of the first to view each new issue. As always, if you have a home you think we might be interested in, please email me at susan@stagesmississippi.com. Thank you for reading Stages® MISSISSIPPI magazine, and we hope you enjoy this issue.

To close, this scripture has spoken to me lately: “For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm: 91: 11–12).

Every one of us has a God-given talent. Some know early in life what their talent is, and some, well, it takes a little while for us to figure it out! I have found that mine is to bring beautiful photographs and stories of fabulous homes and gardens throughout our great state of Mississippi to our readers. These homes are occupied by people in all stages of their lives—from first homes to retired couples. They range from small cabins by a lake  to expansive homes in the middle of the city. We have a wonderful 2018 year planned at Stages® MISSISSIPPI and can’t wait to show you these homes all around Mississippi.

To close, if I can give one piece of advice to anyone that might listen, it would be this: In Jeremiah 29:11, it says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” If you find yourself wondering where the Lord wants you to be this year, go to Him with a teachable spirit, one eager to be tamed, and He will patiently lead you to the path where your talents can best be used.

The holiday seasons are upon us and, for many, this is the time of the year we think about what we are most thankful for and ponder the true meaning of Christmas. We have put together a very special focus section for you, Entertaining at Home, which contains beautifully decorated homes for the holidays. My family also loves to decorate our home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but as much as I do love Santa Claus and presents under the tree, let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11).

On the inside back cover are four non-profit organizations that would love your support. They fill a tremendous void in our communities and change lives for the people they serve. Also remember The Junior League of Jackson’s Mistletoe Marketplace is November 1–4. The theme this year is ’Tis The Season “to sparkle.” Join in the holiday shopping and support a good cause while you are having fun!

In this issue, our focus section is Fabulous Kitchens and Baths . Wait until you see them! We don’t call them “fabulous” for nothing. We were blessed with the opportunity to photograph beautiful homes and speak with local interior designers, architects, and contractors to pull together this issue that I know our readers will hold on to for years to come. And as always, we visited Starkville, Oxford, Hattiesburg, and Cleveland for the perfect layout of tailgating at home. Sometimes, there is just no better place to party than in your home with your loved ones. You can find scrumptious finger food with the Bulldogs, beautiful outdoor tailgating with  the Rebels, delicious southern comfort food with the Golden Eagles, and Tex-Mex with the Fighting Okra.

Our Focus section in the summer issue is Family Living & Summer Escapes. Featured in this section is a fabulous pool area, a family area at Sunnybrook Children’s Home, and a feature on coastal living. I’d like to elaborate on Sunnybrook Children’s Home. Since 1963, it has served as a residential group home for children who have been physically, mentally, and emotionally abused and rescued from their parents through the court system. Sunnybrook is designed for children aged 6–18 and provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with house parents to cater to their needs. Sunnybrook’s services foster the development of morality, responsibility, and spiritual strength through a belief in God where children are taught to hope and trust again. Without community support, Sunnybrook would cease to be in a position to help the children they are so privileged to serve. This ministry is vital to our community and state, so please consider donating any time or money that you could to this tremendous organization.
