From The Editor

It’s fall y’all! It’s the season when the heat and humidity slowly fades and the leaves on the deciduous trees are turning beautiful, exquisite colors. Please be sure to read “As for Me and My House” this issue on page 117, as Malcolm Woody talks about Leaves and Life. It spoke to me, and I hope it will to you, too.

This is our annual “football town” issue where we bring to you homes in Starkville, Hattiesburg, Oxford, and Cleveland that are ready for a gathering of their favorite team’s fans. And for those of you who have been reading Stages Mississippi for any length of time know that I can’t pass this opportunity up to say “Go Dawgs!” Our special focus this issue is fabulous kitchens & baths where you can find some wonderful ideas for your own newly constructed home or remodeling jobs.

Stages® MISSISSIPPI continues to be the magazine for a home remodeling resource! To never miss an issue, can subscribe for home delivery. Subscribers receive copies of Stages® MISSISSIPPI before they’re distributed to businesses throughout the state, meaning you would be one of the first to view each new issue.

It is during this time of the year when we walk outside and say, “Whew, the humidity doesn’t seem as bad today. It’s a miracle.” Or as you can see by the above photos that it was miracle we got a somewhat decent shot of me and the dogs! At football games fans will mumble, “It will be a miracle if we pull this off and win this game.” And in the publishing world when we get to the end of putting an issue together we will sometimes say, “It will be a miracle if we actually go to print on time.” We all use the term miracle pretty loosely. Hang in here with me, I am going somewhere with this… I felt led to share that I am finding more and more that God is still in the miracle making business. He performs miracles small and large. And sometimes the smallest of miracles have the biggest impact on us. I believe a miracle is when God intervenes in the natural order of the universe and the laws of nature (which He created) and makes a temporary exception to perform a miracle. This is brought about by His omniscient power and by His choice and wisdom. I have witnessed miracles lately and I have also prayed for miracles that did not happen. God is still active, powerful, and loving. He is sovereign, and I have to remind myself often that He knows best and He does truly love us. I am grateful for that and I am thankful for true miracles and also for unanswered prayers. And I am overwhelmed that He chose me and the people on our Stages® MISSISSIPPI team to publish this magazine. We continue to be blessed with the kind, wonderful fellow Mississippians that allow us to bring their homes to you. And, of course, our readers and our advertisers are simply the best!

Most of us do actually turn to water for a sense of calm and clarity. We spend our vacations on the beach, by a pool, or at a lake. We get exercise and enjoyment from water sports like boating, sailing, swimming, and fishing. The special focus section in this issue is Family Living & Summer Escapes, which touches on all of the above. We have brought you a charter fishing trip at the coast and two gorgeous backyards—one in Magee, and one in Brookhaven. We hope this focus brings you an idea for a family vacation or ideas for a stay-cation in your own backyard.

And as always, be sure to check out and support the local businesses featured throughout the issue in the ads and in the promotional spotlights. These advertisers are the reason Stages MS is so wonderful!

To close, this scripture came to my mind and I just wanted to share it. I think it is probably because I find rest and peace at the beach, and it is good for my soul. It is a place where I find the beauty of God’s handiwork surrounding everything there and I can meditate and talk to God easily.  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” Matthew 11:28–30.

I absolutely love being outdoors. This is the time of the year where my garden comes to life and I am able to get out and enjoy tending to it. It also reminds me of one of my favorite sayings, “bloom where you are planted.” Like a flower that grows through a crack in the concrete, sometimes we have to be strong enough to flourish and produce something beautiful no matter what the situation is.

In this issue our special focus is Bring on the Outdoor Living. We have a beautiful pool and garden area to show you, an outdoor living area, and an exquisite backyard pool. We hope this focus brings you ideas to incorporate into your own home.

This issue, we again bring four homes with different styles: colorful, historic, the St. Jude Dream Home, and a farmhouse style. And, as always, be sure to check out and support the local businesses featured throughout the issue.

Last week, my two dogs and I escaped what could have been a terrible catastrophe, and just like the inconvenience of this snow and ice, it has made me think deeply about life in general. I am very blessed to be here today doing this job, a job that I find satisfying and rewarding in so many ways. Homeowners welcome me into their homes with a smile and with true southern hospitality for to take photos and interview them. As we “ooh” and “ahh” over their homes, let’s remember what really makes these houses special—the owners themselves. The feature homes in this issue are all incredibly diverse and are furnished in different styles and tastes. We have amazing before and after features in the focus section and several promotional features for you to enjoy.

Remember, you can subscribe to Stages® MISSISSIPPI. Subscribers receive the issues before they’re distributed to businesses throughout the state, meaning you will be one of the first to view each new issue. As always, if you have a home you think we might be interested in, please email me at susan@stagesmississippi.com. Thank you for reading Stages® MISSISSIPPI magazine, and we hope you enjoy this issue.

To close, this scripture has spoken to me lately: “For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm: 91: 11–12).

Every one of us has a God-given talent. Some know early in life what their talent is, and some, well, it takes a little while for us to figure it out! I have found that mine is to bring beautiful photographs and stories of fabulous homes and gardens throughout our great state of Mississippi to our readers. These homes are occupied by people in all stages of their lives—from first homes to retired couples. They range from small cabins by a lake  to expansive homes in the middle of the city. We have a wonderful 2018 year planned at Stages® MISSISSIPPI and can’t wait to show you these homes all around Mississippi.

To close, if I can give one piece of advice to anyone that might listen, it would be this: In Jeremiah 29:11, it says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” If you find yourself wondering where the Lord wants you to be this year, go to Him with a teachable spirit, one eager to be tamed, and He will patiently lead you to the path where your talents can best be used.

The holiday seasons are upon us and, for many, this is the time of the year we think about what we are most thankful for and ponder the true meaning of Christmas. We have put together a very special focus section for you, Entertaining at Home, which contains beautifully decorated homes for the holidays. My family also loves to decorate our home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but as much as I do love Santa Claus and presents under the tree, let us not forget the true meaning of Christmas. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11).

On the inside back cover are four non-profit organizations that would love your support. They fill a tremendous void in our communities and change lives for the people they serve. Also remember The Junior League of Jackson’s Mistletoe Marketplace is November 1–4. The theme this year is ’Tis The Season “to sparkle.” Join in the holiday shopping and support a good cause while you are having fun!
